Erik Karlsson’s reaction to playing against Nathan MacKinnon

Erik Karlsson has played against some of the best players in hockey history. But when he was asked what it’s like to defend against superstar Nathan MacKinnon, he delivered a priceless response.

During his 17 seasons in the NHL, Karlsson has played more than 1,100 games and won the Norris Trophy no fewer than three times. Along the way, he has faced many of the game’s greatest talents.

Three points against Avalanche

Now 35, and turning 36 in May, Karlsson is on pace for 61 points this season. His Pittsburgh Penguins are currently in a playoff spot, and on Monday they dominated the Colorado Avalanche with a 7–2 victory.
Karlsson recorded three points in the game, scoring one goal and adding two assists. Evgeni Malkin also had a three-point night in his return from a five-game suspension for slashing Rasmus Dahlin.
“When you miss five games and then play a team like Colorado at home, I was a little bit nervous before the game. But when I scored my first goal, I felt so much better. Still, it was a big mistake by me to miss five games, but the guys played well. I want to thank my teammates. It was a bad moment for me,” Malkin told NHL.com after the game.

Erik Karlsson’s hilarious response

During the broadcast, Karlsson was asked on live TV what it’s like to defend against one of the best players in the world right now, Avalanche forward Nathan MacKinnon. His response was perfect—though perhaps not ideal for live television.
“Oh shit, here we go,” Karlsson said, laughing as he skated away.
Next up, the Penguins will face the Carolina Hurricanes.
