Brett Hull’s priceless reaction to Wayne Gretzky’s stick

Brett Hull and Wayne Gretzky became teammates on the St. Louis Blues in 1996. Hull, one of the best goal scorers in hockey history, had a habit of checking out his teammates’ sticks when they first arrived. And he didn’t make an exception, even for Gretzky. But when Hull saw his stick, he had a hilarious response: “How do you have so many points?” he screamed at The Great One.

The St. Louis Blues were a very star-studded team in the mid-1990s. And in the early spring of 1996, they added the greatest hockey player of all time to their roster.

Wayne Gretzky to St. Louis trade

When Gretzky arrived in St. Louis, he was reunited with some of his former Edmonton Oilers teammates, with whom he had won several Stanley Cups, including Glenn Anderson and Esa Tikkanen. But the Blues also featured Brett Hull, who is widely considered one of the greatest goal scorers in NHL history. His 741 career goals rank him fifth all-time in the NHL. He was also known as a certified jokester and funnyman.

Chris Pronger funny memory

Also on the Blues at the time was a 21-year-old Chris Pronger. Not only did Pronger get to witness greatness night after night, he also experienced exactly how funny Hull could be—even when it came at Gretzky’s expense. As a guest on the podcast Games with Names, Pronger recalled one incident from when Gretzky had just arrived in St. Louis:
“Every time somebody got called up or came into the room, he immediately grabbed their stick—‘Ha! Now I know.’ F*cking Hully,” Pronger said on the podcast.

Brett Hull’s reaction

Pronger was then asked if Hull checked Gretzky’s stick when he entered the Blues’ locker room.
“One hundred percent. Oh yeah. ‘How do you have so many points? How do you use this thing?’ Great teammate, obviously a great player. Hall of Famer, one of the greatest goal scorers ever. It was my early days in St. Louis, but he was a great teammate—great for me,” Pronger recalled.
