Bill Guerin served as general manager of Team USA and helped lead the team to an Olympic gold medal. During a live TV appearance, he jokingly “threatened” his former teammate Chris Chelios, telling him he would be expected to host a celebration party this summer.
Both Guerin and Chelios enjoyed outstanding NHL careers. Guerin won two Stanley Cup titles—first with the New Jersey Devils in 1995 and later with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 2009. Chelios captured three Cups: one with the Montreal Canadiens in 1986 and two with the Detroit Red Wings in 2002 and 2008. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest American-born players of all time.

Chris Chelios and Bill Guerin for Team USA
The two also represented Team USA together on several occasions, including three Olympic tournaments. Their closest run at gold as players came in 2002, when they earned silver after a 5–2 loss to Team Canada in the gold medal game. But Guerin finally got to celebrate Olympic gold in February as general manager of the first U.S. men’s team to win hockey gold in 46 years.
Throughout the tournament, many players stayed in touch with former American Olympians. Chelios, for example, spoke with Matthew Tkachuk every day and even promised to host a massive celebration at his Malibu home if the team won gold.
Priceless ”threat”
During Tuesday’s broadcast of NHL on TNT, Guerin joined the show remotely while Chelios was in the studio. After congratulating Guerin on the victory, Chelios asked him about the tight-knit brotherhood of the 2026 Team USA squad. Guerin praised the group, saying the players had grown extremely close over the course of the tournament.
That’s when Guerin playfully reminded Chelios of his Malibu party promise.
“It’s an amazing thing to be a part of, and I hope you’re ready for that party at your house in Malibu. Because we’re gonna hold you to it,” Guerin said, prompting laughter throughout the studio.
“I’ll be really happy to host you guys, trust me,” Chelios replied.
