It was a special Sunday for Torey Krug. As the Boston Bruins faced off against the St. Louis Blues, it was a reunion for Krug with players he for so long called his teammates.
Now, they’re rivals, but it was more than just an ordinary contest for the defenseman.
Krug was undrafted when he signed for the Boston Bruins out of Michigan State University. Krug went on to play nine seasons with the Bruins, and he made quite the impression.
During the 2018-19 season, Krug was one of the best defensemen in the world, with 53 points recorded in 64 games. In the playoffs, he recorded 18 points in 24 games and had the most assist in the whole playoffs.
Krug signed with the St. Louis Blues before the 2020-21 season, which meant saying goodbye to several long friendships. For example, Krug was relentless on the ice and wasn’t shy about chirping and slamming opponents.
That led to him being close buddies with Brad Marchand. When Krug faced off against the Bruins and former teammate Brad Marchand Sunday, he couldn’t resist the urge to chirp him.
Before the game, Krug was asked if he had to ”suspend his friendships” when battling for the puck against his former team. He then gave the perfect response, in an obvious jab at Marchand.
“That’s right, especially the guy with a big nose,” said Krug.
Marchand often gets ripped for the size of his nose. Earlier this season, he had a legendary conversation with TNT’s Paul Bissonnette about it before the Winter Classic.
Torey Krug scored a goal against the Bruins in a game that was tied 3-3 in regulation. The Bruins later clinched the W in shootouts.
