The trade rumors surrounding Elias Pettersson have cooled off in recent weeks. But now, a new update about his future is making waves — and it could be significant.
Neither the Vancouver Canucks nor Elias Pettersson are enjoying strong seasons. Just last night, the Canucks suffered their eighth straight loss, with Pettersson scoring the team’s only goal.
Pettersson currently has 28 points in 38 games, but the Canucks sit in last place in the league. In just a few weeks, Pettersson will suit up for Team Sweden at the 2026 Olympics, which could provide a much-needed break from a difficult stretch in Vancouver.

Elias Pettersson trade rumors
Trade speculation around Pettersson had been quiet, especially after the Canucks traded their captain, Quinn Hughes, to the Minnesota Wild. However, it now appears that Pettersson could be the next major name to leave Vancouver if the team commits to a full rebuild, according to TSN insider Darren Dreger.
“Every NHL team has untouchable players, but Vancouver’s management is talking about a rebuild, which means they have to be open to deals — open to almost anything — and that could eventually include trading Elias Pettersson,” Dreger said.
”Canucks are listening”
Pettersson has a no-movement clause in his contract, meaning he has control over where he could be traded. While nothing concrete has happened yet, Dreger believes a move could become a reality in the near future — and it could be a positive change for the star forward.
“There hasn’t been any communication with his agent, Pat Brisson. Any discussions would need to go directly through Pettersson’s camp because of the clause. But the Canucks are listening — and will continue to listen — to interest in Pettersson, even though they believe that a fresh start elsewhere would allow him to truly thrive,” Dreger told TSN.
