Toronto Maple Leafs forward Max Domi is out indefinitely following a surgery that did not go as planned. Now, insider Steve Simmons has shared details about the procedure.
”Something went terribly wrong with the surgery,” Simmons writes.
Max Domi has played for the Arizona Coyotes, Montreal Canadiens, Columbus Blue Jackets, Carolina Hurricanes, Chicago Blackhawks, and Dallas Stars before landing in Toronto for the 2023–24 season.

Max Domi injury update
Domi has remained with the Maple Leafs since then and has become a cornerstone in the team’s locker room. But on May 25, the Leafs organization announced that Domi had undergone surgery to address an injury he played through during the 2025–26 season. Complications arose from the procedure, sidelining him indefinitely.
”Terribly wrong”
Now, Steve Simmons, a writer for the Toronto Sun, has revealed more details in a column.
“According to sources, Domi chose his own surgeon to perform the operation rather than the one the Maple Leafs had in mind. That’s not uncommon with today’s modern athlete, and it doesn’t affect his insurance status as a Leafs player. What is uncommon: Something went terribly wrong with the surgery. For public consumption, no one is saying what. Almost every operation on a professional athlete is followed by a press release indicating that the surgery was successful,” Simmons writes before continuing.
“Whatever happened here wasn’t deemed successful. Apparently, Domi could not walk in the days following surgery, which created significant alarm. His status remains in doubt for the coming season,” Simmons writes.
During the 2025–26 season, Max Domi played 80 games for the Maple Leafs, recording 36 points.
