On January 29, Patrick Kane became the all-time points leader among U.S.-born players. On Wednesday, he was celebrated and moved to tears by the heartfelt words of Chris Chelios.
With an assist on a Ben Chiarot goal on January 29, Kane surpassed Mike Modano as the all-time points leader among U.S.-born players in NHL history, reaching 1,375 points. On Wednesday, he was honored by the Detroit Red Wings ahead of their game against the Vegas Golden Knights.

Patrick Kane ceremony
During the ceremony, Kane—a three-time Stanley Cup winner with the Chicago Blackhawks—was joined on the ice by his girlfriend Amanda, their son, his parents, and his sisters. Kane was given the record-breaking puck and a lot of other thougtful gifts.
A tribute video played on the arena’s video board, highlighting key moments from his remarkable career. The video also featured congratulations from former teammates, including Jonathan Toews, and other notable American hockey players, including former record holder Mike Modano.
Chris Chelios heartfelt words
The video concluded with a message from the “Godfather of American Hockey,” Chris Chelios.
“Incredible, amazing. What an accomplishment, congratulations. Best American-born player!” Chelios said in his tribute, moving Kane to tears.
As for the game, the Red Wings lost 4-3 in overtime and will face the Florida Panthers next.
