Jonathan Toews has not played a hockey game since the 2022–2023 season, but he has now announced that he is returning to the NHL. Naturally, fans everywhere are speculating about where Toews might continue his career. Paul Bissonnette says he has a clue…
Jonathan Toews is a future Hall of Famer who captained the Chicago Blackhawks to three Stanley Cup wins between 2010 and 2015, racking up 883 points (372 goals and 511 assists) in 1,067 NHL games. Toews also has several individual accolades, including a Conn Smythe Trophy, a Selke Trophy, and a Mark Messier Leadership Award. However, he has not played since the end of the 2022–2023 season.
Jonathan Toews comeback
Now, according to his agent Pat Brisson, Toews is attempting a comeback.
“Yes, 100 percent. Johnny is feeling great and we’re moving forward,” Brisson told NHL.com.
Since his last NHL game, Toews has spent time in India and Indonesia focusing on his health, and he is now ready to make a return for the 2025–2026 season. But where will he play?
Toews’ new team
According to Paul Bissonnette of the Spittin’ Chiclets podcast, there are a few teams that make sense. First of all, the Chicago Blackhawks, due to his history with the club. But Bissonnette also believes there are two more, rather unexpected teams that could be a great fit for Toews: the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Anaheim Ducks.
When it comes to the high pressure of playing in Toronto, Bissonnette isn’t concerned.
“He went to the Chicago Blackhawks—an Original Six team and one of the biggest markets in the United States. If there’s anyone who would be used to that kind of environment, it’s Jonathan Toews,” Bissonnette said.
”Want to take a big step”
As for the Anaheim Ducks, Bissonnette’s colleague Ryan Whitney offered a different perspective:
“Anaheim with Q (Joel Quenneville) kinda makes sense. Good weather, so for your body that’s gonna help. And having Q there, and having young guys he could teach. Anaheim wants to take a big step next year,” Whitney said.
