Sidney Crosby’s hilarious congratulation to Alexander Ovechkin

Alexander Ovechkin now stands alone as the only player in NHL history to score 900 regular-season goals, a milestone he reached just one day before facing his longtime rival Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. When they met last night, Crosby delivered one of the funniest congratulations yet.

On April 6, 2025, Ovechkin officially passed Wayne Gretzky as the NHL’s all-time leading goal scorer by netting his 895th career goal. And on Wednesday, he added yet another historic achievement: goal No. 900.

Two of the best ever

It took Ovechkin exactly 20 years and one month to reach the remarkable mark, and congratulations have been pouring in from across the hockey world—including from his greatest rival, Sidney Crosby. The two entered the league together, have spent two decades as division foes, and are widely regarded as two of the best players in NHL history.

Sidney Crosby chirp to Alexander Ovechkin

Last night, just a day after Ovechkin’s latest milestone, the duo lined up against each other for the 99th time. Before the puck dropped, Crosby skated over to congratulate Ovechkin—and couldn’t resist a chirp.
“Congrats, man. Of all f*cking goals, a backhand,” Crosby joked, referencing Ovechkin’s 900th tally, which came off a backhand shot.
“I was surprised, but I’ll take it,” Ovechkin replied.
The game ended 5–3 in favor of the Penguins, with Crosby scoring twice.
