Rumor: Sergei Fedorov might return to Detroit as a coach

The big news in the NHL this week is the firing of Jim Montgomery, but another big story involving the Detroit Red Wings might be in the brewing…

The former Jack Adams Award winner was relieved of his duties as Boston Bruins head coach after an 8-9-3 start to the season, with a -21 goal differential. It’s not good enough for the Bruins, but many still expected them to show more patience at this point, especially since they are still in 4th place in the NHL’s Atlantic Division.

Meanwhile, the Detroit Red Wings currently sit in 6th place in the same division. The Red Wings entered the season with high expectations to take another step forward with their young roster, but their performance has been underwhelming so far.

Head coach Derek Lalonde is in his third year with the team, and their slow start to the 2024-25 season has led to speculation among fans and experts about his future. Lalonde has yet to lead the Red Wings to the playoffs, and now the popular hockey podcast Spittin’ Chiclets has released a new theory about a potential coaching change.

Fedorov to the Detroit Red Wings?

The podcast, which correctly predicted Jim Montgomery’s firing in Boston, has now suggested the possibility of a return for Sergei Fedorov, one of the greatest players in Red Wings history.

Sergei Fedorov is a Detroit legend, having played with the Red Wings from 1990 to 2003. His split with the team was a tough one; he held out during the 1997-98 season, missing 59 regular-season games before signing an offer sheet with the Carolina Hurricanes.

The Red Wings matched the offer, and Fedorov spent six more seasons in Detroit before leaving as a free agent to join Anaheim. Inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015, Fedorov has since become a successful coach in Russia, leading CSKA to back-to-back Gagarin Cup titles before being released after missing the playoffs last season.

If Spittin’ Chiclets is correct, this will surely excite some Detroit fans, as it always does when a legend of Fedorov’s caliber returns to the organization. Check out Paul Bissonnette‘s post on X about it here:
