Rick Bowness praised after calling out his own team

The Columbus Blue Jackets’ season is officially over. Following Tuesday’s 82nd game, head coach Rick Bowness went off on his players, calling them out for their effort and even promising to change the culture—if he returns next season.

The Blue Jackets will miss the playoffs for the sixth consecutive year. They last appeared in the postseason during the 2019–20 season.

Hired Rick Bowness

The organization attempted to turn things around in January, firing head coach Dean Evason and hiring Rick Bowness on January 12. However, the change didn’t produce the desired results, and Columbus ultimately fell short of a playoff spot. On Tuesday, they lost their final game of the season, falling 2–1 to the Washington Capitals. The game itself had little meaning, as both teams had already been eliminated from playoff contention.
But after the game, Bowness did not hold back when addressing his team’s performance.
“All you gotta do is look at the stat sheet. Three hits, 23 giveaways. I don’t know if I’m back, but if I’m back, I’m changing this culture. These guys, they don’t care. Losing is not important enough to them—it doesn’t bother them. How can you go out and play like that? This is why we are out of the playoffs, that kind of effort. You have to hate losing. I don’t care if it’s a meaningless game, I don’t care—show up and compete,” Bowness told stunned reporters.

Fans praise his words

Now, fans are praising Bowness for his blunt reaction to the Blue Jackets’ performance.
“Need more coaches with passion like this in the league,” one fan wrote on X.
“He tells it like it is and doesn’t care if he hurts these multimillionaires’ feelings. Columbus should be ashamed,” another fan added.
“This is exactly what I love seeing from a coach—raw honesty and fiery passion. I agree with everything he said, and this applies to many teams and players. Losing clearly isn’t important enough to some guys, and it needs to change. Would love to have a coach like this on my team,” a third fan wrote.
