Ovechkin’s hilarious reaction to Nic Dowd’s new contract

When it comes to off-ice antics in the modern-day NHL, few can match all-time goal scorer Alex Ovechkin. Throughout the years, Ovechkin has proven himself to be a bit of a rascal—much to his teammates’ enjoyment. When it was announced that Washington Capitals forward Nic Dowd had signed an extension with the team, Ovechkin had the funniest reaction.

Nic Dowd, 34, has spent the last seven seasons with the Capitals. He joined the team ahead of the 2018–2019 season from the Los Angeles Kings, and this year he recorded a career high in goals (14) and points (27) across 81 games. Those numbers have now earned Dowd a two-year contract extension worth six million dollars.

Reaction to Dowd’s Extension

“To play in the NHL for that long, it’s something, to say the least—that’s a privilege in itself. But to be with the same organization, surrounded by some of the best players in the world, is another thing. And to be a fly on the wall for some of the things that have happened within this organization—with Ovi, John Carlson, Tom Wilson, TJ Oshie, Nicklas Bäckström—I mean, the list goes on. And like I said, it’s a privilege,” Dowd told the NHL.

Ovechkin’s Reaction

When head coach Spencer Carbery announced Dowd’s extension, Alex Ovechkin just couldn’t help himself. Carbery began by saying, “This young man in this room,” and then paused—during which Ovechkin blurted out, “Who, me?” prompting laughter from the entire team. After Carbery formally announced the extension, Dowd celebrated by chugging a beer, cheered on by his teammates. You can see the video below.
