Jon Cooper criticizes officials after Pontus Holmberg injury

Tampa Bay Lightning head coach Jon Cooper did not mince his words following Pontus Holmberg’s injury on Monday. He said he was unsure whether the penalty box worker should keep their job.

The Tampa Bay Lightning and the Buffalo Sabres played what has been called the “best game of the season” when they clashed on March 8. On Monday, it was time for a rematch.

Pontus Holmberg injury

Monday’s game wasn’t as dramatic or eventful as the one in March, but it did see the Sabres win 4–2 and Nikita Kucherov register his 400th NHL career goal. It also saw Lightning forward Pontus Holmberg suffer a freak injury. Holmberg lost his balance in the third period and crashed into the penalty box door, which had been left open. Holmberg left the game, and head coach Jon Cooper later described the injury as “not good.”

Jon Cooper outraged

Known for being outspoken with the media, Jon Cooper did not mince his words after the game. He called for the person working the penalty box at the KeyBank Center to be fired.
“I don’t know who is working the penalty box over there, but I don’t know if they should keep their job after what happened there. Leaving the door open like that could have hurt anyone on either team. Those are dangerous situations, so I’m a little frustrated, to be honest,” Cooper told reporters after the game.
Next, the Lightning will play the Ottawa Senators.
