Alexander Ovechkin’s gesture has fans worried for his future

Last night, Alexander Ovechkin scored a hat trick against the Montreal Canadiens as the Washington Capitals secured their third straight win. But now, fans are concerned Ovechkin might retire after this season—because of something he did on Wednesday.

When it comes to players like Sidney Crosby or Alexander Ovechkin, it seems like every new point is another milestone or record. Last night was no exception. Ovechkin reached two major milestones when he recorded his 33rd career hat trick in the Capitals’ 8–4 win over the Canadiens.

Sixth player in history

He became the sixth player in NHL history to score a hat trick at age 40 or older, joining Jaromír Jagr, Nicklas Lidstrom, Gordie Howe, Johnny Bucyk, and Teemu Selänne. Ovechkin also cracked the top ten on the all-time points list, surpassing Joe Sakic with 1,641 points. But despite the historic night, fans fear Ovechkin’s career might be nearing its end.

Worried Alexander Ovechkin might retire

Over the past few weeks, Ovechkin has exchanged jerseys with Brad Marchand, Anze Kopitar, Evgeni Malkin, and—on Wednesday—Connor McDavid. These gestures have fans speculating that Ovechkin might retire or return to Russia after this season.
“Retiring for sure. Exchanging sweaters with all the greats. Wilson next to wear the ‘C’,” one fan wrote.
“Farewell tour for Ovi,” another added.
“He’s gonna retire, isn’t he?” a third commented.
Next up, the Capitals will host the Tampa Bay Lightning.
