Aleksander Barkov is the recipient of the 2025 Selke Trophy, awarded to the best defensive forward in the NHL. The voting ballots have now been released, revealing how each member of the jury cast their vote. The results have fans all saying the same thing.
The PHWA (Professional Hockey Writers Association) votes on the following seven end-of-season NHL awards: the Hart Trophy, Calder Trophy, Selke Trophy, Lady Byng Trophy, Norris Trophy, Masterton Trophy, and Conn Smythe Trophy, in addition to selecting the NHL All-Star and All-Rookie teams.
Aleksander Barkov Selke Trophy winner
This year, they voted for Florida Panthers captain Aleksander Barkov to receive the Selke Trophy—his third time winning the award. After the award recipient is announced, the voting ballots are made public, and this year’s Selke Trophy voting has left hockey fans frustrated. The reason? Eighteen writers left Barkov completely off their ballots.
Fans are furious
Fans are now saying that the writers don’t know anything about hockey, after seeing how many that left Aleksander Barkov off their ballot.
“Absolute funniest ballot,” one fan wrote on Reddit.
“There is no way anyone can seriously say Mikheyev over Barkov. I say this as a Hawks fan. It’s a completely insane take,” another added.
“If you aren’t watching half of the league’s teams because of your bedtime, maybe you shouldn’t vote at all,” a third person wrote.
