Gavin McKenna backed by teammates after charges

Gavin McKenna, widely expected to be drafted first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, is now facing possible prison time after being charged with aggravated assault. Despite this, his teammates have shown public support for him.

The 18-year-old McKenna is considered by many analysts and insiders to be a generational talent and the top prospect for the 2026 NHL Draft. Ahead of the 2025–2026 season, he committed to play for Penn State University, where he has so far recorded 32 points in 24 games.

McKenna, however, could face serious legal consequences. He has been charged with aggravated assault, misdemeanor simple assault, and two counts of disorderly conduct for harassment and fighting. The aggravated assault charge carries a maximum penalty of 20 years in prison. According to the Pennsylvania Magisterial District Court, the incident occurred at a bar on January 31.
Police reports indicate that McKenna struck a 21-year-old man in the face, causing injuries that required surgery. McKenna was released on $20,000 bail and is scheduled to appear in court on February 11.

Backed by his teammates

Penn State has issued a statement regarding the charges:
“We are aware that charges have been filed; however, as this is an ongoing legal matter, we will not have any further comment,” the statement said, according to ESPN.
Despite the charges, McKenna has received support from his teammates. Teammate J.J. Wiebusch commented on McKenna’s Instagram, “Right side is way better than left.”
Teammates Luke Misa and Jackson Smith also posted MMA fighter references in his support.
