Zach Werenski has quickly become one of the biggest names in the NHL rumor mill since announcing that he wants out of Columbus Blue Jackets. Now, however, NHL insider Elliotte Friedman reports that Werenski vetoed a trade to the Dallas Stars. A deal that had already been agreed upon between the two teams.
Zach Werenski has developed into one of the best defensemen in the NHL. In fact, over the past two seasons, Werenski has registered more than 80 points in each campaign. As a result, he won the Norris Trophy for his outstanding performance during the 2025–2026 season.
Zach Werenski trade talk
Werenski has two years remaining on his six-year contract. Earlier this offseason, he announced that he will not re-sign with the Columbus Blue Jackets. They have now failed to make the playoffs for six consecutive seasons. Moreover, Werenski has a full no-move clause in his contract. Meaning he has complete control over where the Blue Jackets can trade him.
According to Friedman, the Blue Jackets had reached an agreement with the Dallas Stars on a blockbuster trade. The deal would have sent Stars defenseman Thomas Harley to Columbus in exchange for Werenski.
Rejected the trade
Both teams were reportedly set to finalize the trade on Wednesday morning. However, Zach Werenski vetoed the deal. As a result, both the Dallas Stars and the Columbus Blue Jackets were left frustrated by the outcome. Reportedly, Werenski wants to remain in the Eastern Conference. With some even suggesting he could reunite with his Team USA teammate Auston Matthews in Toronto.
Meanwhile, the relationship between Zach Werenski and the Blue Jackets appears to have deteriorated even further. Elliotte Friedman reported that Werenski’s representatives are so frustrated with the way the situation has been handled that they intend to reject every trade proposal presented by the Blue Jackets.
