Alexandar Georgiev has had a few tough seasons, struggling to find a long-term fit with an NHL team and failing to post strong numbers when given the opportunity. His next career move might come as a surprise — he’s reportedly considering a return to Russia and the KHL.
When Georgiev entered the NHL with the New York Rangers, the Bulgarian-born goaltender was seen as a potential long-term successor to Henrik Lundqvist. After the arrival of Igor Shesterkin, Georgiev established himself as a reliable backup.

Declining performances
However, his performance has declined in recent years. Last season, Georgiev was traded from the Colorado Avalanche to the San Jose Sharks. Ahead of this season, he was moved again — this time to the Buffalo Sabres — but was placed on waivers last week and subsequently assigned to the Rochester Americans in the AHL, a league he has not played in since the 2018-2019 season when he played 11 games for the Hartford Wolfpack.
Could sign in Russia
Now, reports suggest that Georgiev, who played in the NHL All Star game as late as 2204, may be heading back to Russia to play in the KHL. Although he has never played in the league before, his KHL rights are held by Spartak Moscow. Several other clubs are also reportedly interested in signing the once highly touted goaltender, but no club has been named as a possible destination at this time, according to Hockeyfeed.
