The Utah Hockey Club has finally decided on a name and a logo. From 2025 onward, they will be known as the Utah Mammoth. However, their new graphic design has already stirred controversy, with fans now claiming the logo was stolen.
The Utah Mammoth franchise began as the original Winnipeg Jets in the WHA in 1972 and joined the NHL in 1979. In 1996, the franchise moved to Arizona and became the Phoenix Coyotes. In 2014, they changed their name to the Arizona Coyotes, and in 2024, the team relocated to Salt Lake City, Utah. For their first season in Utah, they were simply called the Utah Hockey Club, but yesterday it was revealed that their new name is the Utah Mammoth.
Utah Mammoth logo reveal
After the reveal of the new name and logo, fans began accusing the team of stealing the artwork from an artist. Utah had previously released two prototype logos—one featuring a mammoth and another featuring a yeti. In February, an X account (formerly known as Twitter) called Blue Shells Hockey published several mockup logos imagining what a Utah Mammoth logo could look like.
Accused of stealing
These mockups combined elements of both a mammoth and a yeti. The mockups bear a striking resemblance to the logo that Utah unveiled yesterday, which has sparked outrage among fans.
“The official logo is way too similar to these concepts. This person needs to be compensated!” one person wrote.
“The team never contacted you or compensated you, and stole your designs to use as the primary logo for a billion-dollar hockey club?” another person posted on Reddit.
The Utah Mammoth has not yet commented on the accusations.
