There’s no one quite like Jaromir Jagr. He’s one of the most iconic players of all time, and it’s actually crazy to imagine that he still plays pro hockey. He played his first game in the NHL in 1990 and made a huge impact immediately.
In his first season in the league, he won the Stanley Cup. The year after, the Penguins won it again, and Jaromir Jagr just continued to improve. He was, together with Mario Lemieux, the best player in the NHL in the 90s, and it was only the beginning of a unique NHL career. He left North America to play in the KHL in 2008 but returned three years later.
He was over 40 years of age at the time but had no plans of retiring. Jagr played with the Flyers, Stars, Bruins, Devils, Panthers, and Flames before quitting. But he didn’t leave hockey. Jagr returned to his native Czechia and started playing for Kladno, for which he’s also the owner.
Jaromir Jagr played 43 games last season and scored 19 points but was sidelined during the start of this campaign. Jagr said that he’d lost the motivation to practice and keep going but still ended up playing at the end of 2022. He’s currently on 14 games played this season, and at 50 years of age, he’s scored two goals and nine points.
And the living legend keeps breaking incredible records in the hockey world. According to Czech outlet sport.cz, Jagr has now tied Wayne Gretzky on an astonishing record that many thought would never be broken.
Wayne Gretzky has the NHL’s all-time goal-scoring record with 894 goals. But if you count in all the goals he scored in the WHA, for Team Canada, and in the playoffs, the number is 1,098.
This weekend, when Jagr scored his second goal of the season, he tied Gretzky on 1,098. This includes goals scored in top leagues in North America, Europe, and for his national team.
As Jagr still plays, it sure looks like Jagr will beat the incredible record and become the highest-scoring player of all time.
Jaromir Jagr scored his first goal of the year in early January, and was praised by his teammate Tomas Plekanec, former NHLer for the Montreal Canadiens.
”The way he’s playing, it was only a matter of time before it happened. His strength in one-on-one battles is immense. He’s still important for us,” he said.
