Roberto Luongo chirps Maple Leafs after Mitch Marner goal

As a player, Roberto Luongo made a name for himself as a true jokester. While he’s no longer active on the ice, he hasn’t slowed down with the jokes—a fact he proved on Wednesday after Mitch Marner’s game-winning goal against Czechia.

Roberto Luongo is one of the best goaltenders ever to play the game. His 489 NHL wins rank him fourth all-time in NHL history. During his career, Luongo also won two World Championships, in 2003 and 2004, and two Olympic gold medals, in 2010 and 2014.

Two Olympic golds

Since hanging up his skates after the 2018–2019 season, Luongo has worked in various roles with the Florida Panthers, and he still follows hockey very closely. He made that very clear on Wednesday, when Team Canada defeated Team Czechia in overtime to reach the semifinals. The game-winning goal came from Mitch Marner, who played his first nine NHL seasons with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ahead of the 2025–2026 season, Marner was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights, where he has made an immediate impact. Meanwhile, the Maple Leafs have been struggling.

“Marner was born to wear that maple leaf on his chest,” Luongo wrote, suggesting it was a mistake to trade him.
Fans online found the chirp absolutely brilliant.
“The funniest man in hockey strikes again,” one fan wrote.
“Cold as ice! Love it,” another added.
“Never change, Lou,” a third commented.
“Love it, Lou. Toronto fans crying hard lol,” a fourth chimed in.
