Jack Hughes under fire over Olympic puck remarks

Jack Hughes became an American icon when he scored the overtime winner to secure Olympic gold. The Hockey Hall of Fame currently has the puck he scored with, but Hughes wants it back. Now, fans are calling him out for his comments, saying he is selfish for wanting the puck for himself.

On February 22, Jack Hughes wrote himself into American hockey history when he scored the 2–1 overtime goal that secured Team USA’s first men’s Olympic gold medal in 46 years.

Following the historic win, Hughes has become a true superstar, appearing on Saturday Night Live and The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. The puck he scored with is currently on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, along with other memorabilia from the tournament, including Megan Keller’s overtime-winning puck and a stick used by Brady Tkachuk.

Wants the game winning puck

In an interview on Tuesday, Hughes said he wants the puck returned to him.
“I’m trying to get it. That’s bullsh*t that the Hockey Hall of Fame has it, in my opinion. Why would they have that puck? I don’t see why Megan Keller or I shouldn’t have those pucks, I wouldn’t even want it for myself—I’d want it for my dad. I know he’d just love having it. When I look back on my career, I don’t collect too many things for myself, but my dad is a huge collector for the three of us. I know he would have a special place for it,” Hughes told ESPN.

Fans are outraged

Now, fans online are criticizing Hughes for wanting the puck.
“Meanwhile, the puck, stick, and net from Crosby’s golden goal are at the HHOF without him complaining,” one fan wrote on X.
“Jack Hughes can’t be this stupid. It’s hockey history and deserves to be in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Notice how Joe Sakic, Sidney Crosby, and Jonathan Toews didn’t ask to keep their gold medal game-winning pucks,” another fan wrote.
“It’s simple—Hughes is classless compared to those guys,” a third added.
