Alexander Ovechkin’s 1,000th NHL goal
With a patented power-play slapshot in the third period, Ovechkin scored his 1,000th career goal (including playoffs). With that goal, he became just the second player in NHL history to reach the 1,000-goal mark.
Wayne Gretzky leads the list with 1,016 total goals—894 in the regular season and 122 in the playoffs. Ovechkin now has 923 regular-season goals and 73 playoff goals.
“It’s always nice to reach something, and it was an important goal as well,” Ovechkin told reporters after the game.
Tom Wilson’s perfect response
It was indeed an important goal, as it tied the game 2–2 against the Colorado Avalanche. The Avalanche eventually won in overtime, but the Capitals earned a valuable point, leaving them six points out of a playoff spot with eleven games remaining.
Ovechkin’s teammates are used to seeing their captain break records. Even if they’re no longer surprised, they still appreciate it.
Tom Wilson gave a humorous response when asked about Ovechkin’s latest milestone.
“I don’t get tired of it—do you?” he told reporters, according to The Hockey News.
