That time Tie Domi ended up in the back of a cop car after fighting a giant chicken at the rink

If you watched the cartoon ’Family Guy,’ you’ve probably seen the main character, Peter Griffin’s ongoing feud with a giant chicken. Griffin and the Chicken started off as friends, but after an argument, they became arch nemesis, and they’ve shared several battles during the years in the show.

But that’s just a cartoon, something like that would never happen in the real world, right? Well, Tie Domi’s rules don’t apply to the real world. And he, of all people, has, in fact, fought a giant chicken.

The unusual fight occurred when Domi was just 14 years of age, playing in Junior B. Domi saw a giant chicken in the stands—well, a mascot—who was taunting him, and he just wouldn’t have it.

“He’s hitting the glass, making all the fans laugh,” Domi said in a Sports Illustrated interview.

”And I actually just beat up somebody, so I said to him, ‘You’re next.’ Went to the dressing room after the game was over. I took my skates off. I climbed back upstairs and there was the chicken waiting for me. And I beat the s— out of the chicken.”

The guy in the chicken outfit had taken the mascot’s head off, but it still wasn’t easy for Domi since the guy he was squaring up against was significantly larger and older than him.

”He was six-foot-six. He had the head off, but everything else on. Beat the s— out of him.”

Someone called the cops on Domi and the chicken man, and Domi didn’t even have time to get changed before they showed up.

“So then I was in the back of a cop car with my hockey gear on and the chicken in the front. The cop said, ‘Well, there’s nothing we really can do about this.’ It wasn’t like I looked for it. All game he was harassing me. Cop let me go. Teammates are waiting. I had to drive two hours in my equipment, because I went right on the bus.”

Domi went on to have 333 fights in his 1,020 games in the NHL. No other player has had more fights than Domi, and nobody has probably ever fought a man in a chicken costume as well.
