Sean Avery stuns fans at Madison Square Garden ceremony

As a player, Sean Avery made a name for himself as one of the biggest agitators in NHL history. Even after his playing career ended, he has continued to make headlines with his outspoken mannerisms. Last night, during a New York Rangers ceremony, Avery sent the crowd into a frenzy with one very typical gesture.

During his ten-year NHL career, Sean Avery never failed to make an impression. He began his career with the Detroit Red Wings but is best known for his seasons with the New York Rangers.

The Sean Avery rule

It was during a game between the Rangers and the New Jersey Devils that Sean Avery inspired the NHL to introduce an entirely new rule. After taunting Devils goaltender Martin Brodeur by waving his stick and hands directly in his face, the league responded by making such behavior a penalty following that 2008 game.
In addition to recording 247 points in 580 NHL games, Avery racked up an impressive 1,533 penalty minutes over his career.

Made the crowd go wild

Last night, Sean Avery took the Madison Square Garden ice once again during a “Fan Favorites” ceremony held by the Rangers to honor players who captured the hearts of the fanbase—and he did not disappoint. Entering the ice with a stick in hand, Avery waved to the crowd before playfully swinging it at former teammate Brandon Prust, sending the Garden crowd into a frenzy.

”Always entertaining”

Online, fans couldn’t stop laughing at Sean Avery’s shenanigans.
“Love this guy, always so entertaining,” one fan wrote on X.
“Love that guy!! He’s my favorite—well, one of them for sure,” another added.
“He’d be great on TV. Why can’t MSG give him a shot in the studio?” a third fan commented.
