Sean Avery slams Mitch Marner after sloppy play

The Toronto Maple Leafs had a rough night, losing 6–1 to the Florida Panthers. It was a poor effort from the entire team, but Mitch Marner has come under fire for a play in the middle of the second period. Now, former NHLer Sean Avery has shared his thoughts on the play—and he doesn’t mince words.

The Leafs had a great chance to gain an advantage over the Panthers at home but came up short. Instead, Florida now holds the upper hand heading into Game 6 on Friday, with a 3–2 series lead.

Sean Avery’s verdict

Marner has faced heavy criticism for his lack of production during this year’s playoffs, with no goals or assists in eleven games. And last night, he made a questionable play midway through the period. After gaining possession in the Leafs’ zone, he spun around twice before tossing the puck into the neutral zone, where the Panthers took control and eventually scored. Now, former NHLer and well-known agitator Sean Avery has weighed in on Marner’s misstep.

Didn’t mince his words

Sean Avery, who played 580 NHL games with the Detroit Red Wings, LA Kings, New York Rangers, and Dallas Stars, filmed himself reacting to the play—and he didn’t hold back.
“This is a regular season play. He thinks he can take the time to avoid a hit—f*cking bullsh*t backhand pass up the middle. Turnover. Now he gets beat to the back door. Stick check—in the back of your f*cking net. 3–0 at home,” Sean Avery commented.
