However, most of the talk surrounding the game has been about the tragic passing of Mark Scheifele’s father on Friday. Now, a heartwarming video of the handshake between Scheifele and Stars head coach Peter DeBoer is going viral.
The second-round series between the Dallas Stars and the Winnipeg Jets was a hard-fought battle, but the Stars managed to clinch the series 4–2 after their overtime win on Saturday. Throughout this year’s playoffs, Mark Scheifele has been one of the Jets’ most important players, tallying eleven points—five goals and six assists—in eleven games. Tragically, on Friday, Scheifele’s father passed away unexpectedly.
Mark Scheifele played in honor of his father
The Jets organization learned of his passing on Saturday morning and immediately spoke with Mark, who decided to play that night in honor of his father. After the Jets’ loss, all of Scheifele’s teammates gathered around him to offer hugs and support, according to NHL.com.
Peter DeBoer’s hearfelt words
During the post-game handshakes with the Dallas Stars, coach Peter DeBoer shared a few heartfelt words with Scheifele. With DeBoer wearing a mic, his kind message has now gone viral among hockey fans.
“I’m so sorry. Your dad would have been so proud of you tonight—how you played, he would have been,” Peter DeBoer said.
