Mattias Ekholm scored the first hat trick of his career on Monday as his Edmonton Oilers defeated the Anaheim Ducks 7–4. When speaking to reporters about the milestone, Ekholm hilariously chirped himself.
On Saturday, Oilers defenseman Evan Bouchard recorded a hat trick in a 6–5 win over the Washington Capitals. Two days later, fellow defenseman Mattias Ekholm repeated the feat.

Put pressure on Team Sweden
In doing so, Bouchard and Ekholm became the first pair of defensemen in NHL history to record back-to-back hat tricks for the same team. Now in his 15th NHL season, Ekholm hadn’t scored a hat trick for as long as he could remember. His three-goal performance also added some extra pressure on Team Sweden’s management ahead of the 2026 Olympics, as he was notably left off the roster.
Mattias Ekholm poked fun at himself
Speaking to the media after the game, Ekholm took the opportunity to poke fun at himself, drawing laughs from reporters.
“I’m usually not known for my goal-scoring ability. I couldn’t buy a goal for 20 games, so that tells you the story,” Ekholm joked. “Some nights the bounces go your way. I’ll try to enjoy this one, because it will probably be my last.”
