Paul Bissonnette didn’t score a lot of points during his 202 NHL games. He did, however, make a name for himself as a world-class chirper—something that landed him a career as a broadcaster and podcaster. But when his podcast, Spittin’ Chiclets, featured 2025 first overall draft pick Matthew Schaefer as a guest, Bissonnette got a taste of his own medicine…
Everyone who loves hockey knows that chirping is a big part of the game. Between teammates, there’s always a lot of chirping to build camaraderie in the locker room. And out on the ice, chirping can give you an edge against an opponent who loses his composure and takes a bad penalty.
Matthew Schaefer guest on the Spittin’ Chiclets
In their most recent episode, Spittin’ Chiclets had Matthew Schaefer on as a guest. Schaefer was selected first overall in the 2025 NHL Draft by the New York Islanders. He’s still only 17 years old, but during the episode, he showed that he’ll be a chirping force to be reckoned with when he debuts in the NHL—and he had everyone on the podcast bursting into laughter.
Chirped Paul Bissonnette
Paul Bissonnette was telling a golf story about how he hit the fairway, and Matthew Schaefer wasn’t slow to fire back in hilarious fashion.
“For once, probably. For once,” Schaefer said, making everybody laugh.
“Hey, this guy is the definition of a ‘show-HL guy,’” Bissonnette responded.
Watching the full video, you really can’t argue with that—Schaefer will definitely be a joy to watch.
