Matthew Knies catches heat after “clueless” remark

The Toronto Maple Leafs concluded their five-game homestand with a fifth straight loss. After the game, Matthew Knies faced criticism from fans over a comment he made.

The Toronto Maple Leafs’ struggles continue. On Tuesday, they suffered their fifth consecutive home loss in a 7–4 defeat to the Buffalo Sabres. It was a homestand the Leafs hoped would help turn things around, but instead it yielded just one point in five games.

Matthew Knies opened the scoring

Although Matthew Knies gave the Maple Leafs an early lead, three unanswered goals from the Sabres in the second and third periods sealed Buffalo’s fourth straight win.
“We look at scoring as everything, and it’s not everything. You’re not going to consistently win in this league by focusing only on scoring goals. You have to play the full rink, and right now we’re not doing a good enough job without the puck—that’s it,” Maple Leafs head coach Craig Berube told NHL.com after the game.

”Haven’t looked at the standings”

Knies also spoke to reporters afterward, answering questions about the Leafs’ dire situation. The team is currently eight points out of a playoff spot, with the Olympic break approaching. When asked about the standings, Knies said the following:
“I think there’s still a lot of hockey left. I think the standings are really close, so I haven’t really looked at it that much, to be honest. That’s how confident I am that we’re going to get there,” Knies told reporters.
Those comments didn’t sit well with many Maple Leafs fans.

Catching heat from fans

Now, Matthew Knies is facing heavy criticism from fans on social media.
“Looks like Matthew is as clueless as his coach,” one fan wrote on X.
“This depicts everything we need to know about the culture of that team,” another fan added.
“Alright, let’s get him checked for a concussion, because right now he’s experiencing delusional thoughts that could be coming from a serious head injury,” a third fan wrote sarcastically.
