Mats Sundin shares why Tie Domi calls him every week

Mats Sundin is one of the greatest players to ever wear a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey. During his 13 years with the Leafs, he became very close friends with Tie Domi. Even today, Domi calls Sundin every week—and according to Sundin, he always says the same thing.

Mats Sundin is arguably the best Swedish player to ever play in the NHL. Drafted first overall by the Quebec Nordiques in 1989, he became the first European player to be selected first in the NHL Draft. In 1994, Sundin was traded to the Maple Leafs, and that same season, Tie Domi also joined the team.

Mats Sundin and Tie Domi became friends

The duo quickly became close friends, with Domi serving as Sundin’s protector on the ice for eleven seasons. Domi retired after the 2005–06 season, but the two have remained very close. Mats Sundin is also the godfather of Domi’s son, Max Domi, who currently plays in the NHL. The two even speak on the phone every week, Sundin has revealed.

Calls him every week

When Mats Sundin was back in Toronto, reporters asked which former teammates he still keeps in touch with. Sundin immediately mentioned Tie Domi—and revealed what he says on the phone, week after week.
“Tie still calls me once a week, reminding me that I never had a concussion because of him. Then he hangs up. ‘Just remember that, Swede,’ he says,” Sundin told reporters.
