Kelly Chase shares the only, hilarious way to fight Bob Probert

With 3,300 penalty minutes to his name, Bob Probert was one of the most feared players in NHL history. Even the tough 1990s St. Louis Blues feared Probert, and Kelly Chase has now shared the only way to fight him.

The St. Louis Blues of the mid-1990s were something else. They had a roster full of now-legendary enforcers such as Tony Twist, Kelly Chase, and Basil McRae. All three were known as some of the toughest players ever — and all of them feared Bob Probert.

Kelly Chase on how to fight Bob Probert

Speaking as a guest on the Ice Guardians podcast, hosted by Brett Hull and Kelly Chase, Basil McRae shared a hilarious moment when Chase told him there was only one way to fight Probert.
“Probie was starting to act up, and Chaser said, ‘No problem. If you’re going to fight him, this is what you do. Don’t let him come out of his jersey — just keep feeding him, and as soon as he comes out of his jersey, just skate away, behind the referee,’” McRae said on the podcast. But Chase had forgotten to tell him one important thing — how to handle Probert afterward.

”Losing his mind”

“So that’s exactly what I did. I ran behind the referee and Probie lost his mind. So we both go to the penalty box, and Chaser is bringing my stuff over. So plan A worked — but what do you have for plan B? Because that guy is losing his mind,” McRae recalled. There wasn’t a plan B, they had to face him again – and probably – again.
