Insider claims Sidney Crosby to Canadiens ‘isn’t impossible’

For 21 seasons, Sidney Crosby has been the face of the Pittsburgh Penguins. But according to persistent rumors, the Penguins’ captain could end up playing for the Montreal Canadiens.

Since his first shift in the NHL back in October 2005, no player has been more closely tied to their franchise than Sidney Crosby. Since the 2007–2008 season, Crosby has captained the Penguins to three Stanley Cups—in 2009, 2016, and 2017.

However, several sources suggest that Crosby might one day wear the Canadiens jersey. When NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman appeared on the La Poche Bleue podcast, he shared his thoughts on how Crosby could become a Canadien:
“I think he’s thought about it, I think he’s considered it, I think it was on his mind a little bit this summer—but it’s going to happen on his terms. I don’t think it’s impossible. But I don’t see it happening before the Olympics, if it happens,” Friedman said.

”A fairy tale ending”

Crosby grew up in Nova Scotia as a Canadiens fan, which is also an important factor—something The Athletic has reported on:
“The Canadiens have reached a point where they almost have too many prospects and not enough roster spots in the coming years. That pipeline would provide a major boost for the Penguins’ rebuild if Crosby were ever to ask out, and the ascending nature of the Canadiens could satisfy Crosby’s desire to win. It would also be a fairy-tale ending to his career to lead his boyhood team to a Stanley Cup. It just fits in so many ways,” The Athletic writes.
