The NHL has seen many sets of brothers play in the league at the same time, but sharing the same team is something truly special. On Saturday, Gary Makar got to watch his sons, Cale and Taylor, play together for the Colorado Avalanche — and he had some heartfelt words about the moment.
Since 1917, 47 pairs of brothers have played on the same team in the NHL. On Saturday, during the Avalanche’s 3–2 loss to the San Jose Sharks, Taylor Makar made his Avalanche debut alongside his superstar brother, Cale. In the stands was a proud father, Gary Makar.

Taylor Makar in the AHL
Taylor, born in 2001, is three years younger than Cale and was drafted in the seventh round, 220th overall, in 2021 by Colorado. Like his older brother, he is an offensively gifted defenseman. Last season, he recorded 18 goals and 12 assists for 30 points in 38 games with the University of Maine in the NCAA.
This season, Taylor has appeared in 10 games for the Colorado Eagles in the AHL, tallying one goal and four assists.
Ahead of Saturday’s game against the Sharks, Taylor was called up — much to the delight of both his brother and their father, Gary. Speaking to reporters during the game, Gary expressed his emotions about seeing his sons share the ice.
”You pinch yourself”
“It was awesome — your jaw drops, and from there it’s just a whirlwind. Really, really cool. You envision this, you see it, and you pinch yourself. It’s so cool,” Gary Makar said, before reflecting on what the brothers were like as kids.
“Arch enemies — always fighting. Taylor would always get the last shot. But they’ve always been really close, and competitive to the core.”
Taylor played just over six minutes in the game and has since been reassigned to the Eagles.
Next up, the Avalanche will host the Tampa Bay Lightning at home.
