Brendan Shanahan silenced the Islanders with just two words

Brendan Shanahan is undoubtedly one of the greatest players to ever lace up skates in the NHL. A true team player, he was not only a prolific scorer but also a fierce competitor who never backed down from anyone. He proved that time and time again—especially during his stint with the St. Louis Blues.

Brendan Shanahan needs no introduction among hockey fans. Over the course of his 22 NHL seasons—with the New Jersey Devils, St. Louis Blues, Hartford Whalers, Detroit Red Wings, and New York Rangers—he racked up three Stanley Cups and an astonishing 1,354 points (656 goals, 698 assists) in 1,524 games. On top of that, he amassed 2,489 penalty minutes. These are incredible numbers, but what truly stands out is how he managed to produce so many points despite spending so much time in the penalty box.

Found out the hard way

That’s what made Brendan Shanahan so special—and so successful. He wasn’t just an offensive weapon; he was also a nightmare for opponents. Standing 6’3″ and weighing 220 pounds, he played a punishing physical game and never hesitated to use his size to his advantage. He was fearless, especially when it came to dropping the gloves—something the New York Islanders once found out the hard way.

Brendan Shanahan’s two word response

During his time with the Blues, Brendan Shanahan was involved in a heated game against the Islanders. After one of the Blues players had stirred things up, tensions were high.
“Our bench was chirping, ‘Who’s going to fight your battles for you?’” recalled then-Islanders head coach Lorne Henning, now a Chicago assistant, according to Sports Illustrated.
“Shanahan skates by and says, ‘I will.’ Our whole bench shrunk,” Henning admitted.
What a player—and what a career.
