Auston Matthews praised for snapping at reporter

Ahead of last night’s matchup between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Vegas Golden Knights, Leafs captain Auston Matthews appeared fed up with repeated questions about his former teammate Mitch Marner, now a key player for the Golden Knights.

The Maple Leafs and Golden Knights faced each other for the first time since Marner — a Toronto native — joined Vegas from Toronto last summer. Marner has quickly found his footing with the Golden Knights and currently sits second on the team in points. Vegas is fourth in the Western Conference standings and, following last night’s 6–5 overtime victory, now holds a four-point lead over the Edmonton Oilers.

Mitch Marner about playing the Maple Leafs

Marner recorded two assists against his former team.
“Obviously, my teammates knew this one meant a little more to me,” Marner told NHL.com after the game. “So I’m grateful to get the win. A lot of guys put in the effort, and it’s a team game out there.”
Matthews, on the other hand, showed little interest in discussing his close friend and former teammate.

Auston Matthews tells off reporter

During an interview following warmups, he appeared visibly irritated when asked what it was like seeing Marner on the ice.
“I didn’t look over, I don’t know,” Matthews said. “I think I’ve had enough of the Mitch questions for the day, so let’s just get ready for the game and go from there.”
Fans have since praised Matthews’ blunt response on social media.
“Good response. Enough of the same questions over and over,” one fan wrote on X.
“First time in 10 years as a Leaf he’s shown a drop of emotion or personality as a captain,” another added.
“Most positive I’ve ever been about Matthews there. Love the sass,” a third fan wrote.
