What does Jamison Coyle do on NHL Tonight?

NHL Tonight is NHL Network’s nightly studio program, and Coyle hosts it: the show that takes an evening of games and turns it into a single sitting of highlights, news and analysis, with former players and insiders beside him at the desk. A host’s job there is to know every team equally rather than one team deeply, and to hand the right question to the right analyst while the night is still running.

He does not pretend it is hard to enjoy. He gets paid, he told his hometown paper, to watch the games he would be watching for free anyway.

Did Jamison Coyle play hockey?

Yes, and he won with it. Coyle started in organized hockey in New Hampshire at five or six years old, played through high school, and was a right winger on the Nashua team that won the 2002 state championship, beating St. Thomas in the final. He was also a shortstop on the 2001 state title baseball team and on the 2002 side that lost the final to Winnacunnet.

He is direct about where it ended. His playing talent ran out after high school, he told the Nashua Telegraph, and his passion for hockey did not. He still plays drop-in games at local rinks.

Jamison Coyle’s route to a national hockey studio ran through four states and one failed interview. He went for NESN’s Bruins pre- and postgame host job, lost it to Dale Arnold, and was hired for NESN Daily instead, which is the job that put him in front of hockey every night.

His college hockey years at NESN also meant covering players before anyone outside New England knew them: Johnny Gaudreau, Jack Eichel and Connor Hellebuyck all came through Hockey East on his watch.
