Katie Storm’s entire Philadelphia career fits inside the two years she spent away from Minnesota television. NBC Sports Philadelphia announced her hire on 10 September 2019 and she debuted on air on 4 October; on 5 January 2021 she said she would not be back to cover the Flyers, and on 4 August 2021 she announced her return to Minnesota with Bally Sports North.

What is Katie Storm’s real name?

She was Katie Emmer until 2021, and Storm is her married surname. She says so herself on her own website, describing marrying her college sweetheart and officially becoming Katie Storm.

Yes. Tom Emmer, the United States representative for Minnesota’s sixth district, is her father, and EliteProspects carries his playing record at Alaska-Fairbanks: three seasons in the early 1980s, 51 games, three goals and seventeen assists. Wikipedia says he played at Boston College before transferring there.

Did Katie Storm play hockey?

Not in an organized league. Her own high school sports were volleyball, basketball and softball, and after that she spent a year on the women’s basketball team at the University of Hawai’i at Hilo before transferring to St. Cloud State. What she has instead is a childhood spent on the family pond as the only girl among six brothers, all of whom played hockey, and she has described it as competitive.

“It was … competitive, and I was always up for a challenge,” she told NBC Sports Philadelphia in September 2019. One of her brothers once dared her to throw a baseball over the house. She threw it into the house instead and broke a few windows.

Her hockey work on camera started at St. Cloud State, where she was both studio host and rink-side reporter for the men’s and women’s teams.

Has Katie Storm won any awards?

Two that matter in her business. In 2018, as a St. Cloud State senior, she won the Jim Nantz Award, given to the best college sportscaster in the United States, and the National Sports Media Association, which presents it, wrote that she had become the first woman to win it. St. Cloud State Athletics reported that her competitors that year came from Arizona State, Syracuse and Northwestern.

She has a regional Emmy too. The Upper Midwest chapter named her its 2023 recipient for Talent, Anchor, Sports for her work at Bally Sports North, after two nominations the year before.

Why did Katie Storm leave Philadelphia?

She did not leave. The job was cut. NBC Sports Philadelphia hired her in September 2019 to host Flyers pregame and postgame coverage, and in January 2021 Bring Me The News reported that she was out as part of pandemic-era cuts.

“And I’m bummed, I wish I had more time, but I’m really grateful for the year I was given,” she said at the time. She was back on Minnesota television seven months later. Every team’s channels are listed in our guide to how to watch NHL hockey.

Is Katie Storm married?

Yes. Katie Storm married in July 2021, and announced it herself, referring to the day she married her best friend. That is where the surname comes from.
