Sidney Crosby milestones 2026: the NHL record he took from Ray Bourque

Updated 2 November 2026. Career figures run through Pittsburgh’s game on 31 October.

Sidney Crosby became the NHL’s all-time assist leader with one team on 31 October 2026. His 1,112th assist, the pass that set up Erik Karlsson’s power-play goal two minutes into the first period in Montreal, moved him one ahead of Ray Bourque, who made the first 1,111 of his 1,169 career assists for Boston.

He finished the night on 1,113 assists and, with a third-period goal, on 1,771 points. That ties Marcel Dionne for sixth on the all-time scoring list. One more point makes sixth his alone.

Which milestones has Crosby just passed?

Four, inside 16 days, and the last two came on the same night.

On 16 October, he recorded his 1,110th assist in a 5-2 loss in Colorado, moving past Joe Thornton into seventh on the all-time list. The next evening in Las Vegas, he tipped in a power-play goal from Tommy Novak and Erik Karlsson for his 657th, one more than Brendan Shanahan. Vegas won 6-2. He had tied Shanahan on 13 October with a two-goal game in Chicago, his first multi-goal night of 2026-27.

Then came Bourque. Crosby tied the one-club assist record of 1,111 with an assist in a 3-2 overtime win over Nashville on 24 October, and broke it a week later in Montreal, where the league recorded it in its own game report. Both Montreal assists came in the first period. Pittsburgh still lost 5-4, which has been the pattern: three of the four milestones arrived in defeats.

How many points does Crosby have all time?

One thousand seven hundred and seventy-one, in 1,434 regular-season games, all of them for Pittsburgh. That is 658 goals and 1,113 assists, for 1.235 points per game across 22 seasons.

The next round number is 1,800, which is 29 points away and would make him the fifth player in NHL history to reach it. The four above him are Wayne Gretzky on 2,857, Jaromir Jagr on 1,921, Mark Messier on 1,887, and Gordie Howe on 1,850.

How many career goals does Crosby have?

658, which puts him 14th on the all-time list. Luc Robitaille is 13th on 668, so that is eleven goals away, and Brendan Shanahan is now 15th behind him on 656.

It is worth putting the goal number beside the assist number, because the shape of his career is unusual for a player at this level: he has 455 more assists than goals. The assist total is the one that has carried him up the all-time lists, and it is the one that produced the record. His best and worst opponents show where the goals came from and where they did not.

How many points does Crosby need to pass Marcel Dionne?

One. Dionne finished his career on 1,771 points and Crosby reached exactly that figure in Montreal, so the two of them share sixth place. The next point Crosby scores breaks the tie and he takes sixth outright.

Passing Dionne does not move him into the top five. Ron Francis sits above them both on 1,798, another 28 points on from there.

How many points does Crosby need to pass Lemieux?

None. He passed Mario Lemieux’s 1,723 points and his 1,033 assists years ago, and he already holds the Pittsburgh Penguins career records for both points and assists. Lemieux is ninth on the all-time points list; Crosby is sixth.

The Lemieux record still ahead of him is goals. Lemieux scored 690 for Pittsburgh and Crosby has 658, so the gap is 33 to pass it outright. At the 29 goals he scored in 2025-26, that is a 2027-28 mark rather than a 2026-27 one.

How many points does Crosby need to break Gretzky’s record?

One thousand and eighty-seven, and the honest answer is that it will not happen. Gretzky finished on 2,857 points. Crosby would need about thirteen more seasons at his 2025-26 rate, and he was born in August 1987. The Gretzky and Lemieux comparison is the better guide to how far out of reach that number is.

The Gretzky mark worth tracking instead is the assists record of 1,963. That one is not close either, at 851 away, but it is the list where Crosby is highest and climbing fastest.

Is Crosby’s point-a-game run in danger?

For the first time, yes. A season at a point-per-game has been the constant of his career, and 2026-27 has not started like one: 10 points in 14 games, a rate of 0.71.

The arithmetic is unforgiving because the schedule grew. An 84-game season at a point a game needs 84 points, so from 10 in 14 he needs 74 in his remaining 70 games. That is 1.06 a game, which is below his career rate of 1.235 but well above what he has managed in 2026-27.

What does Crosby chase after Dionne?

Four marks, three of them live in 2026-27. Robitaille’s 668 goals is eleven away. Paul Coffey’s 1,135 assists is 23 away and would move him to sixth on that list. Ron Francis at 1,798 points is 28 away and would put him in the top five in scoring. Lemieux’s 690 Penguins goals is 33 away.

There is also one obscure mark sitting one game from falling. The league counted the Montreal game as the 299th of his career in which he recorded a point on the game’s opening goal. Only three players have reached 300: Gretzky on 328, Jagr on 326 and Howe on 320.

After Coffey the assists list gets steep: Jagr at 1,155, Bourque at 1,169, Messier at 1,193 and Francis at 1,249. Reaching fifth is a 2026-27 question. Reaching third is not.

Is Crosby signed beyond 2026-27?

Not yet. He is in the final season of the two-year extension worth $17.4 million that he signed with Pittsburgh in September 2024, an annual cap hit of $8.7 million. It matches the $8.7 million he has taken on every contract since 2008.

He has been the Penguins captain since 31 May 2007 and has never played for another club, which is the whole reason the one-club assist record is his and not somebody else’s. It is also why the franchise marks above matter more to Pittsburgh readers than the league-wide ones, and why his splits against every opponent read as one unbroken career.
