Alexander Ovechkin comments on the Olympics

Alexander Ovechkin is one of many star players not participating in the Olympic Games. Because Russia is banned, he isn’t allowed to play. Now, he has commented on the Olympic hockey tournament.

Following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, no Russian athletes are allowed to participate in the 2026 Olympic Games. That includes the Russian hockey team — a team that would have featured significant star power.

Possible Russian Olympic roster

A Russian Olympic roster would have contained some of hockey’s biggest names, including Artemi Panarin, Nikita Kucherov, Kirill Kaprizov, and Ovechkin. But they are banned from participation through the 2026–2027 season.
While the Olympics are entering the final stage of the tournament with the medal games approaching, the Russian hockey players returned to their respective National Hockey League teams earlier this week. On Wednesday, Ovechkin back with the Washington Capitals, addressed the media.

Alexander Ovechkin comment on Olympics

Ovechkin, who played in the 2006, 2010, and 2014 Olympics, spent his time off in Dubai with his family.
“Break was great. Kind of a long flight, but worth it. Some time with family, friends. Don’t think about hockey, don’t think about the world,” Ovechkin told reporters.
Before ending the press conference, one reporter asked Ovechkin if he had watched the Olympics at all.
“No,” Ovechkin responded — and left.
