Craig Berube shocked hockey fans last week when he appeared with a black eye and stitches across his forehead. Berube told the media he’d had a gym accident — and now the full story has been revealed.
Berube is currently the head coach of the struggling Toronto Maple Leafs, who suffered their sixth straight loss last night.

Over 3,000 penalty minutes
But during his playing days, Berube was known as one of the toughest guys the NHL has ever seen. He is one of only nine players in league history to record more than 3,000 career penalty minutes, placing him seventh all-time.
In other words, Craig Berube is a true tough guy. And last week, it seemed like he had gotten into a scuffle — not with an opponent, but with his gym equipment. Now Derek Settlemyre, former equipment manager for the Philadelphia Flyers, has revealed exactly what happened.
Details about Craig Berube’s injury
Settlemyre and Berube know each other and texted about the incident, and Settlemyre shared the details on the Nasty Knuckles podcast.
“He’s doing the press, and the bar came down and got him. The way the cut is, I asked if the skin flapped out. He goes, ‘Oh yeah, the weight of the bar pulled it down.’ He’s one of the funniest human beings. He used to say, ‘Never had a headache, never been sick, never had a concussion, never hungover.’ He has literally said that. And I said, ‘Let me guess, you’re not cocky?’ He said, ‘Nope, didn’t even black out. Didn’t even come close,’” Settlemyre said on the podcast.
