The Toronto Maple Leafs suffered a 4–0 loss to the Washington Capitals last night following an underwhelming performance. After the game, head coach Craig Berube did not hold back, calling out his entire team.
With two wins and four losses in their last six games, the Maple Leafs continue to struggle to find consistency in their 2025–26 campaign. They currently sit 14th in the Eastern Conference, well below their expectations.

”Weren’t tough enough”
After last night’s loss to the Capitals—during which the Leafs went 0-for-5 on the power play where neither Auston Matthews or William Nylander managed to score—John Tavares addressed the team’s shortcomings.
“We weren’t really crisp with the puck. Things weren’t always clean, and that’s where you have to fall back on being a really difficult team to play against. We just weren’t tough enough to play against today,” Tavares said, according to Sportsnet.
Craig Berube called out entire team
Berube was at a loss for words when describing his team’s poor showing and pointed to a lack of urgency and passion.
“They played with more passion than we did tonight. That’s what it boils down to. It looked to me like they had way more urgency in their game—more passion. That’s the difference,” Berube told reporters.
When asked directly about his team’s lack of effort, Berube offered a blunt response.
“Ask those guys, not me,” he said.
