Zdeno Chara’s only request during his Hall of Fame induction

On Monday night, the Hall of Fame welcomed its 2025 inductees. One of them was Zdeno Chara, who had one specific request ahead of the ceremony.

Drafted 56th overall in the third round by the New York Islanders, the 6’9” Zdeno Chara became the tallest NHL player ever when he debuted in 1997. During his years with the Islanders, Chara became known as a strong, tough player with great leadership skills.

Zdeno Chara career stats

That’s why the Boston Bruins traded for him in 2006 and immediately put a C on his chest. For the next 14 seasons, Zdeno Chara became a true Bruins legend, winning a Stanley Cup in 2011. After one season with the Washington Capitals and one with the Islanders, Chara retired after the 2021–2022 season. His numbers speak for themselves: 24 seasons, 1,680 games played, and 200 playoff games—numbers that earned Chara induction into the Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility.

Made one request

Last night, the Hall of Fame ceremony took place. Beforehand, the otherwise modest Zdeno Chara had one request: that he be introduced by Nicklas Lidstrom, his idol growing up in Slovakia. Lidstrom earned the nickname “The Perfect Human” during his playing career due to his extreme professionalism on and off the ice. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2015.

Heartfelt speech to Nicklas Lidstrom

Chara’s request was fulfilled, and he praised Lidstrom.
“Even though I knew I was a completely different player, I always tried to learn and implement some of his skills into my game. Nick, thank you for being here tonight, and thank you for being my idol,” Zdeno Chara said in his speech.
