In 2024, Kyle Dubas traded Jake Guentzel from the Pittsburgh Penguins to the Carolina Hurricanes—something he apparently doesn’t like to be reminded of, according to Paul Bissonnette.
Kyle Dubas, one of the NHL’s most exciting young general managers, has built a reputation for being fearless and unafraid to make big trades. One of the most notable came in 2024, when he sent Jake Guentzel—who had 52 points in 50 games—to the Hurricanes in exchange for Michael Bunting, Vasily Ponomarev, and Ville Koivunen.

Traded Jake Guentzel
Since the trade, Ponomarev has returned to his native Russia to play in the KHL, Bunting is now with the Nashville Predators, and Koivunen has appeared in seven games for the Penguins this season. Guentzel, meanwhile, scored 25 points in 17 games for the Hurricanes before being traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning, where he notched 80 points in 80 games last season and is currently on pace for 82 points this season.
Threatened Paul Bissonnette
Kyle Dubas, however, does not like being reminded of the Guentzel trade—a fact NHL insider Paul Bissonnette discovered the hard way. Speaking on his podcast Spittin’ Chiclets, Bissonnette recounted running into Dubas, who warned him not to mention the trade again:
“He shook my hand, he squeezed it, pulled me in, and said, ‘If you fcking talk about the Guentzel trade one more time on your podcast, I’m gonna fcking make that potato nose even bigger. Now, get the f*ck out of my face,’” Bissonnette said on the podcast.
