Brad Marchand chirps Paul Bissonnette with a legendary trash-talk quote

The Florida Panthers suffered their second straight loss last night, falling to the Detroit Red Wings. Despite the setback, there were no sour faces in the postgame interview — especially when Brad Marchand lit up the studio with a legendary chirp directed at Paul Bissonnette.

After opening the 2025–26 season with three straight wins over the Chicago Blackhawks, Philadelphia Flyers, and Ottawa Senators, the reigning Stanley Cup champions have now dropped two in a row — one to the Flyers and last night’s defeat to the Red Wings.

Traded chirps

Following the game, Marchand — who scored the Panthers’ only goal — joined the NHL on TNT crew for a postgame chat. As usual, he and his good friend Paul Bissonnette traded a few playful jabs.
At one point, a small misunderstanding led to an early laugh.
“I said you guys have a big core group and that you’re familiar with each other’s tendencies, all right Brad?” Bissonnette said.
“I didn’t catch that part,” Marchand replied.
“Yeah, well, if your ears were as big as your nose, you would have,” Bissonnette shot back, sending the studio into laughter.

Brad Marchand got the last word

But Marchand got the last word — and it was an instant classic. After a cheeky question from Bissonnette, the Panthers’ captain delivered one of the most memorable chirps in recent memory:
“There’s this really good quote from Patrick Roy that I liked,” Marchand said. “It goes, ‘I can’t really hear what you’re saying because I’ve got two Cups ringing in my ears.’”
The studio erupted in laughter.

The famous Patrick Roy quote

Marchand’s line was a nod to one of hockey’s most iconic chirps — Patrick Roy’s 1996 response to Jeremy Roenick during the Western Conference Semifinal between the Colorado Avalanche and the Chicago Blackhawks. When Roenick took a verbal shot at Roy, the Hall of Fame goaltender famously replied, “I can’t hear what Jeremy says because I’ve got my two Stanley Cup rings plugging my ears.”
