Jordan Binnington shut down Martin Brodeur with one word

Jordan Binnington has made a name for himself during his NHL career for being a bit quirky at times—like the time Martin Brodeur tried to send a young Binnington down to the AHL, only for Binnington to reply with one cocky word.

With three Stanley Cups, four Vezina Trophies, 691 wins, 125 shutouts, and a place in the Hall of Fame, Martin Brodeur is widely considered the greatest goaltender of all time. During the 2017–2018 season, Brodeur was working as an assistant general manager for the St. Louis Blues.

Martin Brodeur got shut down

That season, Jordan Binnington was called up from Providence. However, he didn’t play, so general manager Doug Armstrong wanted to send him back down—a task that fell to Brodeur.
As a guest on the Cam & Strick podcast, Brodeur recalled what happened when he tried to break the news to Binnington:
“Doug wasn’t there, so I had to send him down. But he just said, ‘No.’ I was like, ‘What do you mean? We’re sending you down.’ But he told me, ‘No.’ I started laughing and said, ‘All right, Doug will call you then, because he told me to tell you we’re sending you down.’ Then he replied, ‘I’m not going anywhere.’”

”He’s a great athlete”

Brodeur didn’t take offense to Binnington’s response.
“He’s really confident in himself, and he’s a great athlete. I played golf with him in the summer—we had a blast. He got a break, and he was ready for his break,” Brodeur explained.
Binnington went on to win the Stanley Cup with the St. Louis Blues in 2018-2019.
