Club legend gets honored before game – collapses on the ice in front of crowd

Swedish forward Nichlas Falk was getting his jersey retired by his club Djurgarden from Stockholm. But during the ceremony, he all of a sudden collapsed in front of thousand of spectators.

For North Americans, the Swedish forward Nichlas Falk might not be a name you’ll know about. But in Sweden, he was one of the best players in the SHL for many years. Representing Stockholm-based club Djurgarden for 16 seasons, pretty much his entire professional career, he became a club legend winning two Swedish championships and captained the team.

Wednesday night, Falk was going to be honored by getting his jersey retired in Stockholm. But during the ceremony, with over 7 000 spectators inside the arena, something went wrong.

Collapsed on the ice

When Falk was preparing to hold his speech, he suddenly collapsed on the ice in front of his family. Paramedics were be his side only seconds later, and after a short while, the forward could stand up and continue speaking.
“Oh, this is like a Youtube-thing”, Falk said before speaking to the fans.

Falk could the ice by himself. But minutes later, when being interviewed by Swedish television, Falk collapsed again. It turned out the 46-year-old suffered from fibrillation which caused low blood pressure.

The club announced Thursday that Falk is feeling relatively well after the incident.
