On February 15, 2014, T.J. Oshie wrote himself into American sports history. But during the legendary penalty shootout against Russia, Oshie actually grew tired—leading to a hilarious reaction as he stepped up for attempt after attempt.

The 2014 Olympic hockey tournament isn’t remembered fondly by Americans. Team USA finished fourth after going goalless in their final two games of the tournament, losing the semifinal 1–0 to Canada and the bronze-medal game 5–0 to Finland.

Still, fans will always remember the preliminary-round shootout against Russia. With the score tied 2–2 after regulation and overtime, the game went to penalties. Oshie went 4-for-6, ultimately winning the game for Team USA and securing a place in the quarterfinals. But taking six attempts—five of them consecutively—can take a toll. And it certainly did on Oshie.

Shares hilarious memory

Appearing as a guest on the Wingmen podcast, hosted by Matthew and Brady Tkachuk, Oshie recalled just how exhausted he became during the shootout.
“I might have had one shift in like a 45-minute span before the shootout. First time I touch the puck, I’m like, ‘Man, my stick feels so long,’ and I lose the puck on the blue line. My first time down, because I hadn’t been on the ice for a while… They weren’t waiting for us, I almost had to hustle more to the bench than I did to the goal. I was actually getting a little tired. I’m not like a super fit guy.
There was one point where I was like, ‘I’m just gonna go on the D side.’ I think that was the fourth shot. So I’m sitting at the end of the D bench and I look back. And I’m like, ‘Do you want me to go again?’ Dan Bylsma literally started laughing and was like, ‘Yeah, go,’” Oshie recalls on the podcast.
And he did—cementing his place in American sports lore.
