WATCH: Capitals celebrate after finally defeating Penguins

It finally happened. Though it seemed like it was impossible, the Washington Capitals have defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins in a playoff series. It took him over a decade in the NHL to do it, but Alexander Ovechkin has defeated Sidney Crosby.

On Tuesday, the Capitals published an All Access video on their YouTube page featuring the team’s post-game celebration after taking down the Pens in Game 6 in overtime on Monday night. Despite the mammoth victory that honestly seems like a Stanley Cup victory of its own, head coach Barry Trotz reminds a group of exuberant Capitals that the team is only halfway to their ultimate goal.

Like I said, this is a big deal for the Caps. Ever since the two phonemes entered the league back in 2005-06 after the lockout season, Crosby has always beaten Ovechkin. The Capitals, despite putting up incredible success in the regular season, were never able to pull it off in the playoffs. In 2009, 2016, and 2017, the Penguins beat the Capitals in the playoffs, but beyond that, Washington has disappointed multiple other times, like in 2009 when they won 54 games in the regular season and lost to an eighth-seeded Montreal Canadiens squad.

Here we are. The Capitals have jumped their biggest obstacle and are now just eight wins away from their first Stanley Cup in franchise history.

The Caps haven't been in the Cup Final since a team led by Olaf Kolzig lost to the Detroit Red Wings back in 1998. Could this finally be their year? window.fbMessengerPlugins = window.fbMessengerPlugins || { init : function() { FB.init({ appId: "1678638095724206", xfbml: true, version: "v2.6" }); }, callable : [] }; window.fbAsyncInit = window.fbAsyncInit || function() { window.fbMessengerPlugins.callable.forEach( function( item ) { item(); } ); window.fbMessengerPlugins.init(); }; setTimeout( function() { (function(d, s, id){ var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) { return; } js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = "//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js"; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs); }(document, 'script', 'facebook-jssdk')); }, 0);
