Thornton Drives Oshie Into Boards, Wilson Responds With Dropping the Gloves

The Washington Capitals made it clear that throwing hits against their star players won’t be tolerated.

In a heated contest between the San Jose Sharks and Washington Capitals, Tom Wilson took it upon himself to drop the gloves with Sharks’ veteran Joe Thornton after Thornton crunched T.J. Oshie into the boards.

Oshie looked to be throwing a hit on Logan Couture when he may have lost his footing. Thornton had Oshie already lined up in his crosshairs and used his backside to drive Oshie’s upper-half into the boards.

The incident saw Oshie lay on the ice motionless before eventually heading to the Capitals locker room.

Later in the game, Tom Wilson, who has racked up many fights over the course of his career, dropped the gloves with Thornton and eventually won the fight. Thornton clearly isn’t afraid to drop the gloves and defend himself, but it’s safe to say no one thinks of Jumbo Joe as a fighter.

The hockey community is in a debate as to whether or not Thornton’s hit was dirty. He was clearly trying to catch Oshie before he fell but Thornton also drove Oshie’s head/upper body into the boards.
Washington went on to win 4-1 and Oshie did not return to the game.
